Description
The Black Backed Jackal Profile by Amy E. Fraser. This is an expressive Jackal portrait in shades of orange, red, black and white with powerful amber eyes complimented with a hunter green textural background.
The black-backed jackal (Lupulella mesomelas) is a medium-sized canine native to eastern and southern Africa. Compared to other members of the genus Canis, the black-backed jackal is a very ancient species, and has changed little since the Pleistocene, being the most basal wolf-like canine. It is a fox-like animal with a slender body, long legs, and large ears and a reddish brown to tan coat and a black saddle that extends from the shoulders to the base of the tail. Black-backed jackals feature prominently in the folklore of the Khoikhoi, where it is often paired with the lion, whom it frequently outsmarts or betrays with its superior intelligence. One story explains that the black-backed jackal gained its dark saddle when it offered to carry the Sun on its back.
Amy E. Fraser’s Oil Pastel Animal Portrait series is an impassioned tribute to the beauty and magic of our beloved Animal Kingdom. Fun, gestural and energetic, these vibrant animals are painted in a stylized realism that is imbued with distinctive character and personality.
