Description
This bold purple beauty in the Potager is technically a weed we have been attempting to eradicate for close to a decade. I may have mentioned that I normally choose a color theme for the companion planting I do in my yearly Potager. Unlike this year’s rather practical and straightforward vegetable garden, I usually create something “Fancy”. I spend countless hours dreaming, drawing, measuring, plotting and researching which flowers benefit which vegetables, who lives best with who, what combination of plants provide the best pest control, best flavor and are the most attractive paired together. Companion planting is a thing, part science, part myth and legend, part experimentation. It’s entertaining and enlightening, and artistic and creative if not always practical and productive. So one year, long ago, the theme was purple, and like most everything I do, it was completely over the top. Especially when it came to the extreme takeover of these purple Morning Glories. They flourished, they flowered, they created millions of seed pods and they planted a decade’s worth of weeds that have plagued us every year since! But… the hummingbirds LOVE them so sometimes we pretend we didn’t see one sneak in and we let it do its thing. In this case we were happy to see the return of the purple Morning Glories in The Potager because the 1500 Heavenly Blue Morning Glory seeds I planted this year did not want to flower for us. Survival of the fittest!
