Description
The Roan Antelope by Amy E. Fraser. This is an expressive antelope portrait in shades of red, orange, purple, black, white and blue with striking dark curved horns and thoughtful brown eyes complimented with a turquoise blue textural background.
The roan antelope (Hippotragus equinus) is a savanna antelope found in western, central, and southern Africa. The roan antelope is a large antelope with a horse-like build. It is the largest antelope in the genus Hippotragus. Only eland, bongo and large male greater kudu can exceed them in weight. They measure 75 to 94 inches from the head to the base of tail and the tail measures 15 to 19 inches. The body mass of males is 534 to 661 pounds and of females is 492 to 617 pounds. The shoulder height of this species is typically around 51 to 55 inches. Named for their roan color (a reddish brown), they have lighter underbellies, white eyebrows and cheeks and black faces, lighter in females. They have short, erect manes, very light beards and prominent red nostrils. The short, smooth coat is brown to amber. The horns are ringed and can reach 3 feet 3 inches long in males, slightly shorter in females. The horns arch backwards slightly. The dark tail, terminating in a black tuft, measures 21 inches long. Characteristic features include a short and erect mane of grayish brown hair extending from the back of the neck along the midline of the back up to the withers, white patches around the eyes and the mouth on the otherwise black face, and long, narrow ears with 1 to 2 inch long tufts.
Amy E. Fraser’s Oil Pastel Animal Portrait series is an impassioned tribute to the beauty and magic of our beloved Animal Kingdom. Fun, gestural and energetic, these vibrant animals are painted in a stylized realism that is imbued with distinctive character and personality.
