The Dodo by Amy E. Fraser is a painting of a fabulous blue Dodo, an extinct flightless bird on the beautiful island of Mauritius, with tropical trees, a lush green mountainscape and striking red wildflowers on a clear blue sunny day. Little is known of the behavior of the dodo, as early descriptions were deprecating to say the least. However in 2016, the first 3D endocast was made from the brain of the dodo; the brain-to-body-size ratio was similar to that of modern pigeons, indicating that dodos were probably equal in intelligence. Not only that, they lived an average of 18 years. The legs were robust and strong, easily able to support the bulk of the 50 pound bird, suggesting it could run quite fast, was quite agile and maneuverable in the dense, pre-human landscape. The Dodo is a delight to behold, overflowing with charm, intelligence and character and is part of Amy E. Fraser’s Menagerie collection of whimsical hand drawn and hand painted animal portraits.
A menagerie is traditionally a collection of captive animals, frequently exotic, kept for display; a precursor to the modern zoo or zoological garden. However, Amy’s Menagerie is one of the imagination only, all animals represented in this collection are wild and free. The “Menagerie” is basically a catchy title to encompass a rather large, eclectic series of full bodied, detailed, head to toe illustrations of magnificent real world animals displayed in colorful landscape settings with a fun, folksy, fairytale vibe presented in a horizontal format.
