Description
The Last Catamount by Amy E. Fraser. This is an expressive big cat portrait in shades of brown, cream, gold and black with thoughtful golden green eyes complimented with a marigold yellow textural background.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has finally declared the catamount extinct decades after its last known sighting. The catamount, also called the eastern cougar, was a mammal that roamed Michigan, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Tennessee and parts of Canada. According to the Fish and Wildlife Service, most of the animals likely disappeared in the 1800s, and the last official sighting was in 1938. the catamount has become a bit of an urban legend over the years. Even though Fish and Wildlife Service says there haven't been any sightings in 80 years, people in the northeastern U.S. say they've seen the eastern cougar to this day. That's one of the reasons the Catamount has been nicknamed "ghost cat". The Mountain Lion (also known as the cougar, puma, panther, or catamount) is a large cat species native to the Americas. Mountain lions are large, tan cats. Their bodies are mainly covered in tawny-beige fur, except for the whitish-gray belly and chest. Black markings decorate the tip of the tail, ears, and around the snout. Mountain lions vary hugely in average body size depending on geographic location, their size is smallest closer to the equator and largest closer to the poles. Generally, though, males weigh between 115 and 220 pounds and females weigh between 65 and 140 pounds. The mountain lion’s range spreads all across the Americas, from the Canadian Yukon to The Strait of Magellan, the greatest of range of any living mammal in the Americas. Mountain lions inhabit a wide range of ecosystems, making their home anywhere there is shelter and prey, including mountains, forests, deserts, and wetlands. They are territorial and have naturally low population densities, which means the species requires large swaths of wilderness habitat to thrive. Unlike other large cats, they cannot roar. Instead they growl, shriek, hiss and purr, similar to house cats. Mountain lions are territorial and solitary.
