Description
The Red Octopus by Amy E. Fraser is a painting of a magnificent red octopus gazing out at the viewer from a decorative blue and green ocean floor. O. rubescens can change its color and texture, making its appearance highly variable. Color can vary from a deep brick red, to brown, to white, or mottled mixtures of the three. An octopus usually forages at night then retreats to its den to eat at leisure. It kills its prey with venom secreted from its salivary glands, then cracks the shell with its sharp beak. It can also drill a hole in the snail's shell with its radula and inject a chemical that separates the snail's flesh from its shell. An octopus deposits empty shells outside its den in a pile, commonly called an "octopus's garden." A red octopus is a highly developed marine mollusk. It has three hearts, one pumps blood through the body and the other two pump blood through the gills. Researchers consider octopuses to be the most intelligent invertebrates. The Red Octopus is a delight to behold, overflowing with charm, intelligence and character and is part of Amy E. Fraser’s Menagerie collection of whimsical hand drawn and hand painted animal portraits.
A menagerie is traditionally a collection of captive animals, frequently exotic, kept for display; a precursor to the modern zoo or zoological garden. However, Amy’s Menagerie is one of the imagination only, all animals represented in this collection are wild and free. The “Menagerie” is basically a catchy title to encompass a rather large, eclectic series of full bodied, detailed, head to toe illustrations of magnificent real world animals displayed in colorful landscape settings with a fun, folksy, fairytale vibe presented in a horizontal format.
