Description
The Sophisticated Yak by Amy E. Fraser. This is an expressive yak portrait in shades of black, white, blue, gray and brown with a regal attitude and intelligent golden eyes complimented with an amber yellow textural background.
The wild yak (Bos mutus) is a large, wild cattle native to the Himalayas but are also found in Mongolia, Nepal and Central Asia. The wild yak is among the largest extant bovid species. They are heavily built animals with a bulky frame, sturdy legs, and rounded cloven hooves. Adults stand 5 to 7 feet tall at the shoulder, and weigh 1,100 to 2,600 pounds. The head and body length is 8 to 12 feet, not counting the tail of 24 to 39 inches. The females are about one-third the weight and are about 30% smaller in their linear dimensions when compared to bull wild yaks. Domesticated yaks (Bos grunniens) are somewhat smaller. Both sexes have long shaggy hair, with a dense woolly undercoat over the chest, flanks, and thighs for insulation against the cold. In males especially, this undercoat may form a long "skirt" that can reach the ground. The tail is long and horse-like, rather than tufted like the tails of cattle or bison. The coat is typically black or dark brown, covering most of the body, with a grey muzzle (although some wild golden-brown individuals have been reported). Yaks are animals with three times the lung capacity of cows and have more and smaller red blood cells, which allows them to transport oxygen more efficiently.
Amy E. Fraser’s Oil Pastel Animal Portrait series is an impassioned tribute to the beauty and magic of our beloved Animal Kingdom. Fun, gestural and energetic, these vibrant animals are painted in a stylized realism that is imbued with distinctive character and personality.
