The White Ewe by Amy E. Fraser is a painting of a gorgeous domestic sheep with a fluffy white wool coat gazing out at the viewer with big beautiful golden eyes from within a hilly woodland pasture landscape complimented with purple wildflowers and a purple sky. An adult female sheep is referred to as a ewe, an intact male as a ram, occasionally a tup, a castrated male as a wether, and a young sheep as a lamb. Studies show that sheep recognize and are attracted to individual sheep and humans by their faces, individual sheep can remember 50 other different sheep faces for over 2 years. In addition to long-term facial recognition of individuals, sheep can also differentiate emotional states through facial characteristics. Sheep are key symbols in fables and nursery rhymes and have had a strong presence in many cultures, as icons of heraldry and in ancient systems of counting sheep, especially in areas where they form the most common type of livestock. She creates in her home studio nestled in a beautiful wildflower meadow, surrounded by enchanting wildlife, deep in a magical fairy tale forest. When Amy is not drawing, painting or sculpting she can be found wandering the forest, photographing nature, tending to her garden or practicing the fascinating craft of Sourdough baking. Amy has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Parsons School of Design and a Masters of Arts and Liberal Studies from Dartmouth College.
