Description
The Ural Owl by Amy E. Fraser. This is an expressive Owl portrait in shades of gray, white, blue, brown and yellow with deep brown eyes complimented with a royal blue textural background.
The Ural owl (Strix uralensis) is a large nocturnal owl. It is a member of the true owl family, Strigidae. The Ural owl is a member of the genus Strix, that is also the origin of the family’s name under Linnaean taxonomy. Both its common name and scientific name refer to the Ural Mountains of Russia where the type specimen was collected. Like most Strix species, it has a broad, rounded head with a correspondingly round facial disc, barring a tiny V-shaped indentation. The Ural owl has, for an owl, an exceptionally long tail that bears a wedge-shaped tip. In color, it tends to be a plain pale grayish-brown to whitish overall, with a slightly darker grey-brown to brown back and mantle with contrasting whitish markings. The under parts are pale cream-ochre to gray-brown and are boldly overlaid with dark brown streaking, without crossbars. The Ural owl is a rather large species. Full-grown specimens range in total length from 20 to 25 inches, making the Ural Owl the eighth longest owl species in the world.
Amy E. Fraser’s Oil Pastel Animal Portrait series is an impassioned tribute to the beauty and magic of our beloved Animal Kingdom. Fun, gestural and energetic, these vibrant animals are painted in a stylized realism that is imbued with distinctive character and personality.
