Description
The Booroola Merino Ram by Amy E. Fraser. This is an expressive sheep portrait in shades of beige, gray, brown, cream and white with pale green eyes and magnificent spiraled horns, complimented with a golden apple green textural background.
The Booroola Merino is one of worlds 20 merino sheep breeds. The Merino is a breed or group of breeds of domestic sheep, characterized by very fine soft wool. It was established in Spain near the end of the Middle Ages, and was for several centuries kept as a strict Spanish monopoly; exports of the breed were not allowed, and those who tried, risked the death penalty. During the eighteenth century, flocks were sent to the courts of a number of European countries, including France (where they developed into the Rambouillet), Hungary, the Netherlands, Prussia, Saxony and Sweden. The Merino subsequently spread to many parts of the world, including South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. Numerous recognized breeds, strains and variants have developed from the original type; these include, among others the Booroola Merino Ram as depicted in this portrait. The Merino is an excellent forager and very adaptable. It is bred predominantly for its wool, and its body size is generally smaller than that of sheep bred for meat. Merino have been domesticated and bred in ways that would not allow them to survive well without regular shearing by their owners. They must be shorn at least once a year because their wool does not stop growing. If this is neglected, the overabundance of wool can cause heat stress, mobility issues, and even blindness. The Booroola Merino was started by Jack and Dick Seears of Booroola and this particular strain is known for the high rate of multiple births.
Amy E. Fraser’s Oil Pastel Animal Portrait series is an impassioned tribute to the beauty and magic of our beloved Animal Kingdom. Fun, gestural and energetic, these vibrant animals are painted in a stylized realism that is imbued with distinctive character and personality.
